DISCOVERING | Lake Superior Smelt Decline & 1800's Log Dam Trout Habitat

Subscribe:

Episode 34 - Tonight we talk to experts about the decline of the rainbow smelt population in Lake Superior, the consumption advisory on them and why.

UPDATE ON STORY: In 2024 the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), announced that high PFAS levels found in smelt from the Great Lakes and inland water bodies are actually from false positive results in lab testing (mLive). However then the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services may have lowered the PFAS level limit to place a consumption advisory and that consumption advisory may still exist.

Then we get a history lesson on the Menominee River Watershed and how the pine lumbering era of the late 1800's, early 1900's has created some good spots for trout fishing.
